Why Gardening?

Teaching kids about gardening is a great way to get them interested in learning more about their environment outside and start their conservation education. By getting them involved in growing plants and flowers, they can learn about the importance of taking care of the environment. Gardening can also teach kids about where food comes from and how to cook healthy meals. In addition, gardening is a great way to get exercise and fresh air. It’s also a great way to spend time with family and friends. There are many ways to get kids interested in gardening, such as starting a vegetable garden, planting a tree, or even just helping out in the yard. Whatever you do, make sure to have fun and enjoy the process!

Getting Started

One of the most important things when introducing your children to gardening is to keep in mind their age and that they can be impatient. So when choosing what to plant, it’s best to find things that work best for their age group. If you have younger kids, try planting anything easy to grow or that grows quickly like sunflowers, pumpkins, or watermelons. These are all fun and easy things to grow. You can try planting more difficult things to grow like tomatoes, peppers, or carrots for older kids. Once you’ve chosen what to plant, it’s time to get started!

Remember to take the time to explain what you’re doing as you’re gardening. This is an excellent opportunity to teach your kids about the process of growing plants and flowers. Also, be sure to let them help out as much as possible. They’ll love being able to see the fruits of their labor!

Simple Upcycling Idea for a Small Garden for Your Kids

One simple idea when it comes to gardening with your kids is to make small gardens that are easier for them to take care of while also learning about how to recycle an old item or container into something new where they can grow and have their own little garden. The best ones that you could use for this are an empty milk or juice container!

First, you want to make sure it’s clean and has been washed with soap and water. Then, with a pair of scissors, you will need to poke a hole in the corner of the container so you can cut off one of the sides on the long side. This will open up one side of the container allowing you to make it into a little planter or garden box. In addition, this allows you to have both a deep enough space for your plants to grow and also more room to plant more things within the space. At this point, you will need to decide whether you’d like the planter to live inside or outside, as if it will be outside you should add some holes in the bottom for water to drain through. Now for the fun part! Your kids can decorate the outside of their little garden container before you add the soil and seeds to the inside. Then once it’s decorated, you can potting soil to the container patting it down as you go. You can now water the soil some to dampen it and add your seeds of choice by poking a hole wherever you want to add seeds. Once this is done, all you need to do is place it in a window inside or put it outside. Finally, this is when you can let your kids take over their little project, just make sure they water their plants or flowers as needed and then watch the plants or flowers grow!

Harvest Time

If you have decided to grow fruits or vegetables, harvest time is one of the best parts about gardening with kids! When you are harvesting with kids, the best way to make it enjoyable for everyone is to make it fun and simple. You can do this by making up a game and making it easy for them to understand what to look for when harvesting each fruit or vegetable. For example, comparing sizes of how big what you are harvesting should be to their favorite toy, their arm, their hand, or their foot. When thinking about the color you could also compare it to things that they would know really well like their favorite characters or favorite colors! Additionally, this is a great time to talk about the importance of eating healthy and potentially also trying new foods depending on what you decided to grow. You can also use this opportunity to teach your kids about cooking by letting them help you prepare meals with the food you’ve grown together.
